These courses aim to cover the basics that a student is expected to imbibe in
this discipline, and to familiarize the students with different genres of writing.

These courses are advanced courses, which provided an extended scope to
explore other domains and nurture the students’ skills.

Skill Enhancement Courses (Credits-4)
These are value based courses that aim to provide hands on training to have the skills
and competencies.

Generic Elective courses (GE) (Credits-6)
These courses are interdisciplinary in nature and provide exposure to students
of other discipline, who opt to study these courses in English thereby
broadening the scope of learning.

Core Compulsory English courses (Credits-6)
These two courses are offered to all the discipline of arts stream as well as to
the commerce stream. These courses aim at enhancing the communication
skills of the students while making them aware of different genres like story,
poetry and essays.

Course objectives / expected outcomes
- To acquaint the students with the literature of the 16th c and the 19th c England – the two
of the greatest periods of literary history that witnessed the maturing of Drama and Novel
respectively .
- To acquaint the students with these genres of Drama and Novel and the similarities and
differences between these literary forms and their features.
- To develop an understanding of the concept of plot, characterization, theme and familiarity
with the literary devices and techniques for comprehensive understanding and appreciation
and literary texts.

GE-1- Literature from Himachal

Course objectives:
- To widen the scope of literature by including oral narratives transcending generations.
- To understand the relationship between folklore, oral narratives and culture.
- To make the students understand and appreciate Folklore that keeps alive the psychological
patterns, instincts and archetypes of the collective word of a community.
- To introduce them to diverse expressions of folk and written literature of Himachal Pradesh.
Contemporary India: Women & Empowerment

Course objectives:
- To make the students understand how a gendered perspective is responsible for many evils
prevalent in society.
- To make them understand the concepts of class, race and gender as social constructs.
To equip them with analytical, critical and creative skills to interrogate the biases in the
construction of gender and patriarchal norms for the sake of women Empowerment after the
reading of some texts pertaining to issues of gender , patriarchy and feminism .
